Dec 5, 2009 - WALKATHON 1
The city witnessed its first walkathon to raise awareness on the perils of severe obesity on December 5th 2009. Organized by the OFI, it took place at the Marina Beach from 7 a.m to 9 a.m. More than 7000 students from the city’s schools and colleges registered and walked, carrying placards. The number of individual registrations stood at above 1700. The walk was flagged off by Member of Parliament Ms. Kanimozhi and former cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Other celebrities included actress Rambha and actor Srikanth. All leading newspapers and magazines of Chennai City published news the following day. ''Worldwide, the success of anti-smoking campaigns can be attributed to persistent and repeated public awareness programmes over several decades. We at the OFI believe that something along these lines is needed for the prevention of obesity in India, and this walkathon is a beginning. Similar campaigns would follow and the walkathon would become an annual feature in Chennai”, said Dr.Kumeran, Founder Trustee of OFI. "Our goal by the year 2015 is to reach out to the whole of Tamil Nadu and educate people that obesity is a disease. There are plans to focus on other cities and make it a nationwide movement", Dr.Kumeran said. Enclosures: see picture gallery
